Our Statewide Student Day of Poetry has been broke up into five regional events for 2015. You are now perusing the LOWELL event!

On Thursday, December 10, Mass Poetry’s Student Day of Poetry is taking over UMass Lowell! SDOP features a morning poetry sampler, writing-generative workshops, performances, readings, and a student open mic. We’ve got something for everyone, from the student who isn’t even sure they like poetry to the senior leading the after-school poetry club.

Poetry That Talks Back

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

“You will ask: why does your poetry/not speak to us of sleep, of the leaves, of the great volcanoes of your native land?/Come and see the blood in the streets,/come and see/the blood in the streets,/come and see the blood/in the streets!”

-Pablo Neruda

Some ask, “Should poems be political?” Others answer, “If you’re paying attention, how can they be anything else?”

In this workshop, we’ll read and write poems that want to change the world. Poems concerned not solely with language, but with vision. We’ll use words that are clear, concrete, and urgently direct; words that believe in the possibility of justice. That demand it! Our poems will respectfully (or not so respectfully) disagree. We’ll work on poems that witness; that create a record. Poems that know before you can change things, you must be willing to name them. We will read and write poems that speak for those who have been silenced. Poems that know how to listen, and when to talk back.
